The show had only two slightly memorable elements: a catchy theme song and Jack Wild, the British actor (he was 17 in 1969) who’d memorably portrayed the roguish Artful Dodger in the 1968 movie version of “Oliver!” (he received an Oscar nomination for his work). “HR Pufnstuf” revolved around costumed characters with huge heads - including “star” HR Pufnstuf, who was supposed to be a dragon (could’ve fooled me) - and a (human) kid named Jimmy who, with his magical flute, lands on some weird island. Maybe it was economics (the show’s already done, so let’s get whatever mileage we can out of it). NBC, apparently, felt differently, since it repeated the show for three more years. If you can’t hold a kid’s attention on TV, you’re in big trouble. Pufnstuf part of new live-action series "Mutt & Stuff" coming to early 2016 Geeked out on this one: Cling and Clang from H.R. I’m old enough to have watched this abysmal show in its original iteration (it aired in 1969), and even as a kid, I knew this was bad, low-rent, pandering television. The connection here is that “Mutt & Stuff” is the brainchild of “HR Pufnstuf” creators Sid and Marty Krofft - and that is a show I can speak to. ![]() I’m sure it’s a fine show, and Cesar Millan is an extremely likable guy. I haven’t seen “Mutt & Stuff,” and Nickelodeon is known for its clever programming. I give you Exhibit A: The “This rocks!” social media reaction to the news that several characters from “HR Pufnstuf” - a ’70s-era kiddie show so amateurishly bad it lasted for only 17 episodes - will appear on an upcoming special episode of Nickelodeon’s new series, “Mutt & Stuff” (which stars “Dog Whisperer” Cesar Millan and his son, Calvin). (I owned a leisure suit - not cool, believe me.) Nowadays, it seems that anything to do with the ’70s is retro and cool. More often than not, it’s the baby-boomer generation that’s guilty of what I’ll call “False Nostalgia”: looking back with rose-colored glasses at an event - or, in this case, a TV show - that’s best left forgotten. deals with Bryan Cranston in 'Your Honor' New documentary 'The 12th Victim': Fugate a 'Natural Born Killer' or Starkweather pawn?
